The original October target date cannot be met as obtaining a location and to complete the necessary changes to satisfy the needs for consumers is taking longer than expected. We have also been informed that the “Club House” program will not be continued. The Disability Rights Florida organization is assisting us in an attempt to have Karen reconsider. It is suggested that emails be sent to Mr. Howard Bell, Senior Advocate for the Disability Rights Florida at: howardB@disabilityrightsflorida.org expressing your concern of the closing and requesting assistance in the continuance of the “Club House”. We must all band together and voice our concerns. This is the first step in individual advocacy. If we all remain silent we will never accomplish any goals.

We are currently meeting with our legal staff to determine the final outcome of the CIL of SW FL. The new Executive Director Ms. Karen Dickerhoof has interviewed applicants for the position of “site director” to supervise the Fort Myers office. Once a selection has been made we have been informed that person will be responsible for the hiring of staff persons. It is our understanding that all previous staff who were employed with the CIL of SW FL. will be considered for positions. A new location is also being investigated. It is the intent of Ms. Dickerhoof to resume full operations by October 3, 2011. (The RSA budget year begins October 1 and funding will nto be released until that date).”

They are in the process of hiring the staff and our board is assisting them in finding a new location to operate from. This is a process as once a building is found, lease’s have to be signed, office moved back from temporary storage, equipment and phones set up.
We assure you that we are all working hard to get this done in the shortest time possible. The good news is that it looks like we will be reopening. I wish I could give you a date for this but keep checking this site and we will update you as soon as we news.

Dear Consumers and Community:

It is with much sadness that we inform you that the Center for Independent Living will be closed for a little while.  On July 1, 2011 our current building lease expired and we were unable to secure a new location in time.

Rest assured the goal of the Board of Directors, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Services Administration, and the staff is to reorganize and open the doors at a new location as quickly as possible.  However, we have no timeframe as of yet.

We have contacted our state and federal funders to also come and perform an entire review and provide technical assistance during this time.

During this transition we wish you well and encourage you to check the CIL’s website for updates and information. It will be updated at least weekly during this time.

We remain committed to serving personal with disabilities in Southwest Florida.
